The trust which runs the Dunedin Physio Pool has appealed to the Southern District Health Board to waive $100,000 of its rent while a machinery malfunction forces it to remain shut.

The pool closed in May after the machinery which superheats its water broke down.

The SDHB rents the pool to the Otago Therapeutic Pool Trust, which has a lease which runs until 2029, the year when the heating scheme which provides the pool’s energy is due to end.

The pool is making no revenue during its closure.

SDHB chairman Pete Hodgson told a board meeting yesterday he received a letter from pool trust secretary-treasurer Neville Martin late last week which asked if the board would consider assisting the trusts.

Mr Hodgson said the board - which had previously agreed not to collect rent when the pool was closed for reasons beyond its control - would need time to consider the request and that it would be on its agenda for its next meeting.

"The idea getting a further 10 years use out of the pool, or more if they develop their own energy scheme, for $100,000, strikes me as not a bad deal at all, but it is not OK to have this come to the board for a decision now."

Board member Lyndell Kelly said orthopaedic surgeons had approached her in support of the pool trust.

"It shows good value for the DHB, overall."

Board finance, procurement and facilities executive director Nigel Trainor undertook to meet Mr Martin to discuss the issue.
