A neglected Dunedin reserve is about to get a new lease on life with the addition of a community garden.

The Dunedin City Council has granted consent for the garden in Dalmore reserve in Pine Hill.

Pine Hill resident Kelley Allen, who is helping lead the project, hoped it would provide a boost to the suburb.

‘‘What I've noticed in the seven years since I've been up here is that we don't have any real amenities, or parks, or anything,'' Ms Allen said.

She also hoped it was the beginning of a larger makeover of Dalmore reserve, a large green space which at the moment was overrun with gorse.

She hoped tracks would eventually be created in the reserve.

The plan was to begin digging in the garden next month.

North East Valley Community Project manager Marty Cancilla said it was working with Ms Allen and others in Pine Hill on the garden.

‘‘We are going to cover them as far as insurance goes and manage any funds that they have, so it will be a nice partnership,'' Mr Cancilla said.

The garden in Pine Hill would replicate the successful one in Northeast Valley.
