Police exercise handcuff ingenuity

Dunedin Police swung into action with handcuffs to restrain a set of wayward doors on George St at the weekend.

Acting Senior Sergeant Chris George said police were called to Specsavers in George St about 2.30am on Saturday after a pedestrian noticed the store's front doors were unlocked.

Police were unable to contact the store manager or the building's landlord to lock the doors, so they used the only resource available to them - handcuffs.

"I don't think you'll find that in the manual of best practice," Sgt George said.

"But it was very good innovative problem solving by the officers involved."

Sgt George said police investigated the store but found no-one had broken in and nothing was missing.

He believed the front door was accidentally left unlocked on Friday night.

Staff at Specsavers declined to comment yesterday.
