Dunedin police are on the hunt for two women who allegedly burgled a Walter St house on Tuesday.
Senior Sergeant Liz Waru, of Dunedin, said the women, one in her 30s, the other in her 40s, were disturbed when the owner came home about 1pm.
She said the house was locked and the door had been kicked in.
When the owner came home, the women fled in a red car, Snr Sgt Waru said.
The Mornington house had been ''rummaged through'' and a cell phone and some alcohol were taken.
Police are following solid lines of inquiry about the two women.
Snr Sgt Waru said police were also seeking information in relation to a stolen auxiliary boat motor.
The 8-horsepower motor was taken from a boat parked in a locked yard in Mason St, central Dunedin, some time between August 2 and August 11.
Snr Sgt Waru said there had also been a spate of burglaries in the North Dunedin area and police patrols were being increased.
There had been about six burglaries during the past three weeks, some in commercial and industrial premises, she said.
