Dunedin police arrested and charged a 40-year-old man with assault after another man was left bleeding from the face in the Octagon yesterday.

The injured 45-year-old man was found near The Craic Irish Tavern about 9.20am and was transported to Dunedin Hospital by police.

He was believed to have been punched in the face, a police media spokeswoman said.

Police faced a short hunt for the man wanted in connection, she said.

"By the looks of things they [police] pretty much knew who it [the attacker] was to start with,'' the spokeswoman said.

It is understood the two men were known to each other.

The accused would appear in the Dunedin District Court at a later date.
