Otago Polytechnic school of social services staff Diane McKenzie (left) and Shannon Booth pack Christmas presents for children in Kaikoura.

The gifts, part of the "Arohanui from Otago" project by the school, would be handed out by Santa at a community Christmas party in Kaikoura on Monday.

Polytechnic school of social services operations co-ordinator Erin Marlow said she was ‘‘amazed’’ at the generosity of Otago’s residents.

More than 500 gifts had been collected for the project.

The Otago Polytechnic gifts would go to Casebrook Intermediate School, in Christchurch, where a main collection point was organised to collect gifts from all over the world.

From there they would be sent to Kaikoura and distributed to the  town’s children.
