St Clair Hot Salt Water Pool is to close on March 31, and despite the season including the hottest month on record in Dunedin, the number of people visiting the facility has failed to set any attendance records.

Dunedin City Council data reveals nearly 42,000 visits were made to the outdoor pool this season since its opening on October 2 last year until the end of last month.

The Earp family frequently uses the pool. Steve Earp and his daughter Iris (10) and son George (8) went for a swim in the outdoor pool on Sunday.

Mr Earp said his family moved to Dunedin before Christmas and had visited the pool "every other weekend''.

Nearly 42,000 visits was a 65% increase on the same period in the 2016-17 season but was down 24% on the same period in the 2014-15 season.

January was the hottest month on record in Dunedin since Niwa records began in 1947.

Despite the warm weather, the figure of nearly 13,800 people who visited the pool was down about 5700 on the number the facility had in January 2015.

Council parks and recreation Moana Pool manager Nicola Smith said she believed the 65% increase in visits on last season was because of the "atrocious'' weather in the 2016-17 season.

"We didn't even get a summer.''

Ms Smith had no theory on why the hottest month on record in Dunedin failed to result in an attendance record.

"Some times there is no rhyme or reason in the numbers.''

Port Chalmers Pool opened on September 18 last year and will close on March 31.

The heated indoor pool had nearly 3400 visits in February this year - 26% more visits than in February last year, Ms Smith said.

Mosgiel Pool opened for the season on September 1 last year and closes on April 6.

The heated indoor facility had "increases of a few hundred'' visitors for each month of the season so far, compared with last season.

A reason for the rise in visits to the pools could be the council's bid to raise the profile of the three facilities, including by holding pool parties.

It was investigating if the seasons of the three pools could be extended, she said.
