Postie injured on road

A postie has received minor injuries after being struck by a vehicle in Dunedin.

Southern District Command Centre Acting Senior Sergeant Jared Kirk said the 62-year-old New Zealand Post worker was on a bicycle delivering mail and was hit while cycling over a pedestrian crossing in Andersons Bay Rd, near Teviot St, about 9.30am yesterday.

The woman had failed to look for traffic before entering the crossing and was hit by the vehicle at low speed, he said.

The woman suffered a split lip and was treated by St John staff at the scene.

The vehicle had travelled beyond the diamond painted on the road before the woman had cycled out, Snr Stg Kirk said, and the male driver was too close to the crossing to stop in time.

Snr Sgt Kirk said people needed to check that the road was clear before using a pedestrian crossing.

Riding a bicycle on a pedestrian crossing was not an offence, but was not recommended, he said.

''Our advice would be to stop, get off your bike and push the bike across and then carry on.''

The police investigation was continuing.
