Protest over cuts to PE School

About 1000 people have gathered in the campus area to protest cuts to the University of Otago's School of Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Sciences.

The number of papers at the school would be reduced from 65 to 33, while 12 fulltime equivalent positions would be cut under the plan.

Protesters today marched from the school's steps through the campus to the lawn in front of the clocktower, where some performed a stirring haka.

Organiser Ella-Rose Haig said the turnout was impressive.

"It's a very special degree, with very special people."
