Standing between the newly installed replica gate pillars in front of the historic Dunedin Prison on Wednesday are (from left) Dunedin Prison Trust trustee Barry Timmings, Wainwright & Co Stonemasons mason Reuben Tait, trust chairwoman Virginia Nicholls, and trustees Lindsay Hall and Jane Adams.
Most of the work had been completed by March last year, but the replica gate pillars and short length of iron fence were installed this week.
The second stage of the project cost about $700,000 money being contributed from various community groups.
Ms Nicholls said the second stage of the restoration began in September 2020 and included replacing the roof, refurbishing the exterior, asphalting and installing exterior lights among other things.

The goal was to repair and preserve the building as authentically as possible, she said.

The trust was in discussions for the third stage of the project, which would be focused on the central courtyard, she said.
