Pupils give to charities

A busy month fundraising has allowed Queens High School year 10 pupils to give more than $1300 to charities in their community.

Principal Julie Anderson said the initiative was suggested by last year's school council, and during the past six weeks, year 10 pupils had been running car washes, raffles, can drives, baking sales and lunchtime barbecues to raise funds for Women's Refuge (the tamariki programme), Heart Foundation (Heart Child), the SPCA and the Cancer Society.

"I think it's really good to see teenage girls thinking beyond themselves and making a difference for people in the wider community," she said.

Representatives from the community organisations attended an assembly at the school yesterday to receive the funds and shared their plans for the money.

The initiative had been so successful, year 9 pupils were now raising funds for charities in the community and the school planned to make it an annual event, she said.
