Hundreds of items from old shows could get a new lease of life thanks to a special sale.

Volunteers for Musical Theatre Dunedin had spent most of the week getting all the items ready for Saturday’s sale.

"It’s been a massive clear-out," society president Marlise Sparks said.

"There are a whole array of costumes no longer required, but we did not want to throw them out."

It was estimated the society needed to sell about 2000 items in order to clear everything on Saturday.

"There are a lot of costumes where you could just use your imagination — we put aside a lot of items for one school, which is doing The Little Mermaid this year."

Some of the items — including some leftover costumes from a performance of Cabaret, or the "bunny outfit" from Legally Blonde — were a bit more "racy", but Ms Sparks was confident most items would find a good home.

"You can repurpose a lot of this stuff.

"Over the past week, as we’ve put this all together, there’s been a lot of reminiscing about the old shows. Some of the stuff here hasn’t quite stood the test of time, but enough of it has.

"You could dress a choir here if you wanted to.

"And if you’re in the mood for themed parties, there are lots of different eras represented."

The money raised from Saturday’s sale will go towards this year’s season of Sister Act.
