The recent leasing of the Mosgiel Railway Station, after it stood empty for nearly two years, was a "great" step forward for the area, Sarah Davie-Nitis said yesterday.

Mrs Davie-Nitis, who is the Mosgiel-Taieri Community Board chairwoman, said the lease was a positive development for Mosgiel.

"It's exciting, and I look forward to seeing what eventuates."

The 1875 building in Gladstone Rd South had been run as the Mosgiel Station Function Centre by the late Blackie Catlow for 16 years.

It has been empty since early 2017, when the lease with KiwiRail was not renewed after Mr Catlow rejected a proposed rent increase.

Marketing agent Terry Senior, of Industry-One Ltd, said yesterday the unnamed new tenant could talk about what was planned after the required consent was obtained, but details were confidential at this stage.

It is understood a consent application has been made.

KiwiRail chief operations officer Henare Clarke said KiwiRail understood the community interest in the station and was "very pleased" to find a suitable tenant.

"Old rail station buildings are often a landmark and regarded with great affection in their communities, so our preference is always to see them in use," Mr Clarke said.

A KiwiRail spokeswoman said information on its future use would need to come from the tenant.
