The Regent Theatre is getting rouged up ready for its re-opening next month after a $6.8 million upgrade.

The theatre will reopen on August 4, with the 2011 New Zealand International Film Festival.

There has been plenty of drama behind the scenes this week, with a 11.5m by 7.5m movie screen and bar area being installed and new carpet laid.

"It's exactly the same as the old carpet. We had to get it specially made," manager Sarah Anderson said yesterday.

"It's all coming together beautifully. We're 85% booked over the next 18 months."

Ms Anderson said it was hoped to schedule public open days over the coming months.

"The film festival is a brilliant opportunity to see the newtheatre for the price of a movie ticket."

The Regent will also be screening the Rugby World Cup quarterfinals, semifinals and final in 3D.
