Department of Conservation duty officer Amy Phipps moved a sunbathing seal from Portobello Rd at Challis Point yesterday.

The seal had been sleeping  soundly on the road  as concerned residents directed traffic around it for more than an hour from about 2pm.

Mrs Phipps was called to coax the seal into Otago Harbour.

The male seal had been shifted from the road three times before 3pm yesterday — twice by the Department of Conservation and once by a member of the public, Mrs Phipps said.

A local  said the seal was a regular visitor to Otago Harbour and residents had named it Dale.
