Willowbank Station Officer Stu Slade said "a chap out running slipped or tripped and hurt his knee".
"Hato Hone St John’s were alerted to it first and then they called us for a lift assist," he said.
Firefighters picked up the man using a rescue stretcher which had a special wheel attachment to help carry him the 10 to 15 minutes’ walk from the exit.
"We used the wheel and stretcher to guide down steep tracks and over rocks and bumps and things," SO Slade said.
