At 102 years old, Dunedin woman Connie Nelson considers herself lucky to be able to drop off her great-granddaughter for her first day of school.

Mrs Nelson took Valerie Nelson, 5, to Mornington School yesterday morning, 97 years after she had gone there herself.

Mrs Nelson said she enjoyed taking Valerie to school.

"I’m just fortunate that I can still do everything.

"I never thought I’d still be alive and I can’t believe that I’m 102."

Valerie would be the fourth generation of Nelson children to attend Mornington School and a special connection had been formed for the family with the school.

Mrs Nelson said it was never planned that the generations of the family would go to school at Mornington.

"It just sort of seemed to happen."

Her family lived in the Mornington area and the school was walking distance from their house so it made sense the children would go to school there.

In 2015, when the school celebrated its 150th anniversary, Mrs Nelson was there to cut the cake and she was now the school’s oldest living alumnus.

Mrs Nelson said the school had changed a lot since she was there and the hall was the only structure that remained standing.

She said the swimming pool was built when her sons were attending school there.

Mrs Nelson said all generations of Nelson children had a great time at Mornington and Valerie would too.

Valerie’s father, David, said he remembered his grandmother dropping him and his brother off on their first day at Mornington School.

He said it might become a tradition for Nelson children to go to Mornington in the future.
