Sculpture installed on Knox Church plinth

A sculpture dedicated to the Ukraine war is the first of many to be installed at a new site for public art in Dunedin.

A sculpture plinth that was inspired by the one in Trafalgar Square in London will showcase sculptures from Dunedin artists in the Knox Church upper lawn area in George St.

A working group of Dunedin sculptors teamed up with the Deacon committee of Knox Church to create the stage to showcase the art.

A sculptor from the committee, Stuart Griffiths, said the plinth had been dedicated to prolific Dunedin sculptor and former Otago Sculptor Trust chairman Peter Nicholls.

Mr Griffiths said the sculptures would turn over every four months.

"Sometimes people don’t like public art but at least you know it’s going to go away and another one is going to turn up soon."

The four-month turnover would establish the plinth as a lively and dynamic art feature, not only in this precinct, but in the city, Mr Griffiths said.

The first sculpture to be installed on the plinth would be Slava Ukrani, Glory To Ukraine, by Lawrie Forbes.

Mr Griffiths said the sculpture was about freedom, peace and solidarity and was a strong message about the Ukraine war.
