Mr Crombie died at Dunedin Hospital on February 13.

He was 55.

About 400 people packed into the auditorium to remember and celebrate Mr Crombie, who served on many boards, companies and organisations in Otago and nationally.

He was known for his friendly, low-profile approach, his genuine desire to help others and his dislike of needless formality, including the wearing of ties.

The funeral service was led by celebrant and long-time family friend Dawn Brieseman.

Mr Crombie's son, Michael, reflected on the family's story, another son, musician David Crombie, contributed a musical tribute, and a final letter from Mr Crombie's wife, Janet Crombie, was read.

Deputy Mayor Chris Staynes praised Mr Crombie's extensive contributions to Dunedin, including as chairman of
Dunedin City Holdings since 2013, and as Otago Museum Trust Board chairman since 2011.

Museum director Ian Griffin also praised Mr Crombie as a ''quintessential Dunedin bloke'' who displayed ''outstanding leadership skills''.
