SH1 delays traffic for an hour

Traffic was backed up for almost a kilometre after a four-vehicle crash on State Highway 1 near Evansdale yesterday.

The crash, involving two trucks and cars, occurred 1km north of Porteous Rd about 4pm.

A police spokesman said northbound traffic was delayed for just over an hour while the scene was cleared.

A car stopped at roadworks was hit from behind by a truck, shunting it into another car and a truck in front of it, he said.

A St John spokesman said a Dunedin man aged in his 70s was flown by helicopter to Dunedin Hospital's emergency department with moderate injuries.

Two people were taken by ambulance to the hospital's emergency department with minor injuries.

● A 26-year-old woman was taken to Dunstan Hospital with moderate injuries after the vehicle she was driving rolled in Wedderburn last night.

The Toyota Land Cruiser rolled on the Wedderburn-Becks Rd about 6.45pm, a police spokesman said.

A St John spokesman said the woman was taken to Dunstan Hospital with a suspected broken elbow.

Fire crews from Omakau and Ranfurly attended the scene.

It was unclear what caused the crash.

● A Ranfurly man aged in his 50s was flown to Dunedin Hospital with serious injuries after a motorcycle crash on the Ida Valley-Omakau Rd yesterday.

The motorcycle the man was riding left the road near Moa Creek about 4pm, police said.

A St John spokesman said the man was flown to the hospital's emergency department by an Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter in a serious condition.

The cause of the crash was not yet known.
