A crowd of about 80 people joined in meditation on the University of Otago clocktower lawn yesterday, at the Otago Light of Peace ceremony.

During the ceremony there were speeches from vice chancellor Prof Harlene Hayne, chief executive of Miss Universe New Zealand Nigel Godfrey, Miss Universe New Zealand Diamond Langi and Dunedin city councillor Christine Garey on the importance of peace and tolerance, particularly in the light of the Christchurch mosque attacks.

Buddhist monk the Most Venerable Sudham Sudhammo also addressed the crowd, before leading it in meditation.

There were 150 LED ''candles of peace'' lit by the crowd about 5.30pm.
