Shutterbug musician delighted by honour of award

News that he was to receive the 2021 Dunedin Public Library citation was music to the ears of Dunedin photographer and musician Paul Allen.

The honour came for his work on the Nook & Cranny Music Festival, for which he had been the official photographer for since the festival’s inception in 2016.

He had also performed for the festival, while in 2020 he generously donated a collection of more than 4000 curated photographs of Dunedin to the libraries Scattered Seeds — He Purapura Marara archive, along with his photographic exhibition, "The People of South Dunedin".

Mr Allen said it had been "a surprise and a true honour" to receive the citation.

When he first heard of the idea for the music festival he approached the library to offer his photographic and musical talents.

"Its a chance to meet with new musicians, support such a wonderful venue and wonderful event."

Each year the citation took the form of a bespoke artwork commissioned for the recipient.

This year it was produced by Dunedin artist Lynn Taylor, who incorporated guitar strings, camera parts and other elements in her work.

His walls were full of photos, so he was looking forward to reshuffling things to find a special spot for the award.

The citation was normally presented at the annual library Christmas morning tea for volunteers, but Covid-19 restrictions had caused the event to be cancelled last year.

Library services director Bernie Hawke said it had been fantastic to finally be able to recognise Mr Allen’s contributions to the library.

"Paul is a selfless supporter of library events, and staff and the community have benefited significantly from his expertise and willingness to help others."

The citation was presented by Dunedin Mayor Aaron Hawkins at a small private ceremony in the library yesterday morning.
