International opera singer Simon O'Neill plays the E-flat bass (tuba) at a rehearsal at the Kavanagh College Auditorium last night with Dunedin's St Kilda Brass Band, featuring conductor Peter Adams (left).

O'Neill (43) played the tuba with the band when he was at the University of Otago studying music in the 1990s.

He hoped to play with the band at the auditorium tonight.

''I'm a rubbish tuba player. I played it for 15 years and I loved it, but I was not very studious.''

O'Neill travelled to Dunedin from Korea yesterday after performing with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra.

O'Neill will also talk about his career and perform at a fundraising event for Arts Festival Dunedin at St Hilda's Collegiate chapel at 4.30pm tomorrow.
