A 15m crack opened up on Portobello Rd at Turnbulls Bay last night, closing a portion of the road and delaying planned repair work.

The crack appeared about 7.30pm and asphalt fell from a portion of the road between Frances and Moerangi Sts, Senior Constable Lox Kellas, of Portobello, said.

Traffic was diverted through a nearby car park, which prevented delays.

The Dunedin City Council and contractors involved in the ongoing work were advised of the slip, he said.

Traffic lights were set up to control traffic throughout the night.

It appeared a slip in the excavation face beneath the road at Turnbulls Bay had caused the crack.

The slip might cause a delay in the ongoing repair work.

A $1.51 million project to build a retaining wall at Turnbulls Bay was under way.

The wall was required after the road was undermined during a storm in mid-2013 and the damage has caused traffic delays ever since.

Snr Const Kellas said he understood concrete was to be poured today. However, it seemed likely that would be delayed as further repairs were needed.

The retaining wall was originally expected to be completed in May, depending on the weather.

It would be built to allow for future road-widening and cycleway work.
