Celebrating diversity at Otago Girls’ High School along with their peers are pupils (from left) Elizabeth Olusina (15), who is wearing traditional Nigerian clothing, Jomana Moharram (14), wearing traditional Egyptian clothing and Greta Neilson (15), in traditional Tokelauan clothing.

Pupils were encouraged to embrace their cultural clothing and show pride in who they are during Cultural Day yesterday, which was held to mark Freedom Week.

Pupil Andrea Austin (16) said the day was run by the school’s Amnesty International group and involved eight performances from eight different cultures.

"We want to celebrate the diversity that we have in our school.

‘‘It is just really cool to have all these different communities come together and have fun and learn together.

‘‘We wanted people to embrace their culture, wear their cultural clothes proudly and show pride in who they are," she said.

Otago Girls’ has pupils from 22 different countries and 28 different languages are spoken at the school.

As of yesterday, the pupils had raised nearly $400 to give to the Dunedin Multi-Ethnic Council.
