Special mobility unit

Just two weeks into his job, Constable Hamish Fraser has a decent work story.

The Dunedin policeman was lucky enough to be nominated by his colleagues to escort an elderly gentleman's mobility scooter from George St to the Dunedin Public Hospital yesterday.

After taking a minute to familiarise himself with the controls, Const Fraser took the modest back street option, avoiding lunchtime crowds, to get to his destination.

"It's not quite as racy as a patrol car ... it'll be one of the many things I'll get to do on this job," he said.

He had "no problem" helping the 82-year-old who had been taken to hospital by ambulance after swerving to avoid a pedestrian and tumbling from his scooter about midday.
