A pair of Otago Polytechnic graduates hope their selection as emerging designer finalists is the first of many steps in their fashion careers.

Ellen Ross and Ethan Cruise are among this year’s 30 finalists in the iD International Emerging Designer Awards hailing from 33 fashion schools across 14 countries.

Their collections would be showcased in the second half of iD Dunedin Fashion Show tomorrow and Saturday.

Ms Ross said her selection as a finalist was a fantastic opportunity.

"I feel really lucky to be finalist and I still find it amazing that I have been chosen out of so many applicants.

"It is a really special moment and I feel privileged to be a part of such an iconic Dunedin event. I would definitely regard iD as a stepping stone."

She described her collection, "Onset", as a commercial capsule that would appeal to those who took a thoughtful approach to building their wardrobe.

Mr Cruise said his selection was a big milestone.

"Since I started my studies in 2019, I’ve always dreamt of showcasing my work at iD.

"Having the opportunity for the 2023 design awards is a really special feeling.

"It’s an indicator to me that I’m doing something right," he said.

His collection, "The Liminal Space", is comprised of dark, heavy fabrics adorned with layers of textile embellishment.

iD Dunedin Fashion co-chairwoman Sally McMillan said it was lovely to showcase the two Dunedin finalists and the show provided them amazing opportunities.
