They may not have actual superpowers, but Supergrans Dunedin volunteers have energy, enthusiasm and a lifetime of skills and experience to share.

Supergrans Dunedin co-ordinator Marie Sutherland has 29 volunteers on the books, ready and willing to ‘‘fly out'' into the community and help out.

‘‘Our aim is to help young families to learn those life skills that are going to help make them more independent and cope with life better,'' Ms Sutherland said.‘‘It's about getting them to where they want to be.''

Supergrans are men and women of mature years who volunteer their time to mentor young families in a wide range of life skills, from menu planning, budget shopping, sewing and gardening to just being a listening ear.

'‘We're a free, confidential and non-judgemental service,'' Ms Sutherland said.‘‘Our aim is to help build up people's confidence so they can deal with the things life throws at them.''

Supergrans Dunedin has been in operation for 13 years, and is one of seven branches under the umbrella of Supergrans Aotearoa.

Ms Sutherland was involved in the establishment of the Dunedin branch - originally set up by the Malcam Trust - and believes strongly in the benefits of the organisation.

‘‘Supergrans is good for both the young people we work with and for the older people who are our volunteers,'' she said.‘‘It's great for older people to keep busy and use their skills to help others.''

Supergrans accepts referrals from other social agencies in Dunedin, but also welcomes direct contact from the community. If you need support, or you know someone who would benefit from some mentoring from a Supergran, phone 474-0582, email supergrans.dunedin@xtra.co.nz, or check out Supergrans Dunedin on Facebook.
