Two surfers were rescued from Bird Island yesterday afternoon after being caught in rips at Smails beach, Dunedin.
The female surfers, who declined to be named, were taken off the island about 4.30pm by St Clair Surf Life Saving Club and Marine Search and Rescue personnel using inflatable boats.
Surfer Brad Henderson and his friend raised the alarm when they saw the surfers waving their boards, seeking help.
Senior Sergeant Brian Benn said he was pleased the women did not make their situation worse by attempting to come ashore.
The most frightening prospect for stranded surfers was probably the fact many sea lions called the rocky island home, he said.
Marine Search and Rescue adviser Stefhan Brown said the "heavy, nasty" sea was no place for surfers yesterday.
He said lifesaver James Coombes climbed on to the island to advise the women before the rescue so they knew what to expect.
Marine Search and Rescue chairman Martin Balch said Bird Island was a common spot for strandings: between 15 and 20 rescues had taken place there in the past decade.
