A classroom at Taieri Beach School is about to get its first makeover since the 1980s.

The Ministry of Education has provided about $25,000 for the renovation of one of the school's two classrooms so it would meet the ministry's heating standards.

The room will be painted, receive new insulation, the ceiling will be lowered, new curtains and blinds will be hung, some windows may be double-glazed, and a heat pump will be moved to help heat the room.

Taieri Beach School principal Liz Bishop was delighted the room was finally going to get some attention.

''It has become necessary because it's an old building and it's not up to code.

''The staffroom and the offices were done [renovated] in 2006, but this second classroom was added in 1961 and hasn't been renovated since the late 1980s.''

The year 1-8 school has a roll of 14 pupils, ranging in age from 5 to 10.

Mrs Bishop believed the renovations would make a significant difference to their health and education, particularly over the winter months.

''It will make this winter so much more pleasant.

''It will be better for the children. It should be a much healthier environment.''

Mrs Bishop said the work was expected to be completed during the Easter school holidays next month (April 3-19).
