Cooper Patrick (left) and Jack McGrath (both 5, of Mosgiel) prepare in their karts in the pits at the Christmas meeting at Silverstream Raceway in North Taieri on Sunday.

KartSport Dunedin life member Daniel Harvey said drivers competed for the Thomson Memorial Trophy. Each year, the trophy was contested by the class with the most entrants.

This year, of the 35 racers at the meeting, the Rotax max heavy class raced had the most competitors, with 10 battling for the trophy.

The trophy was first awarded in 1978, the year after Mosgiel brothers Bernard and Rob Thomson died in a car accident when returning to Dunedin from racing in Invercargill.

Members of the Thomson family were at the meeting on Sunday to present the trophy.

"It’s a big deal," Mr Harvey said.

Arron Black, of Wingatui, won the trophy and Mark Ahlfeld, of Mosgiel, came second.
