Hundreds of smiling faces welcomed the start of a Mother's Day Fun Run/Walk at the Caledonian Ground, Dunedin, yesterday.
About 300 people, mainly mothers and children, took part in the annual 5km event, which started at 10am, with most taking the walk option, instead of running.
The Dunedin event is part of a nationwide series of activities, organised by Jennian Homes yesterday, to support the Heart Foundation's "Go Red for Women'' campaign.
This aims to improve the heart health of New Zealand women and girls.
As part of the event, Elmgrove School in Mosgiel will receive vouchers amounting to $2500 to buy sports equipment; and Chloe Hawken, of Dunedin, received a new mountain bike as a spot prize.
Jennian Homes Otago franchisee Debbie Payne said the Dunedin event had proved "really positive'' and successful, with more people taking part than last year's 270 participants, including many more children.
Mrs Payne was pleased to see so many family groups taking part in the fun day, which was "all about heart health''.
And she hoped some participants would also be encouraged to continue to undertake more exercise.
