Team’s quiz win was for gorilla

A Dunedin pupil dedicated a hard-fought quiz win to a dead gorilla yesterday.

A Bayfield High School team won the Otago Daily Times Extra! Otago years 9 and 10 current events quiz at Kaikorai Valley College hall.

The team members,  Chris Hawkins (14), James Light (15) and Finn Cattaway (14),  scored 97% to beat 54 other three-pupil teams.

The teams were from 11 schools from South Otago and East Otago.

Finn dedicated the win to the memory of a 17-year-old Western lowland gorilla called Harambe.

In May, a 3-year-old boy climbed into a gorilla enclosure at the Cincinnati  Zoo and Botanical Garden in the US and was dragged by Harambe.

A zoo worker feared for the boy’s life and shot and killed Harambe.

The death of Harambe should never be forgotten, Finn said.

"We still haven’t had justice for Harambe."

The team beat an Otago Boys’ High School team by one point.

"It was exciting," Finn said.

"This is the first time I’ve won anything," James said, looking at the team trophy and his winning medal.

The event was run by the Otago Daily Times through Extra!, its monthly Newspapers in Education publication for primary, intermediate and junior secondary school pupils.School in the central South Island will  compete in quizzes next week.
