Teen brandishing toy knives also had real one - police

A teenager waving around toy knives in central Dunedin allegedly lashed out at police once they found a real one tucked in his waistband.

Members of the public in Great King St reported the 18-year-old after witnessing him flashing around what looked to be a knife and acting "disorderly" at 3.30pm yesterday, Sergeant Matt Lee said.

When police arrived, the teenager calmly handed over two toy knives.

However, when police asked him to then lift up his shirt they spotted a real knife tucked away.

The teenager then became verbally aggressive towards police.

He was arrested and charged with possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and disorderly behaviour likely to cause violence.

The teenager would appear in Dunedin District Court at a later date.
