Five teenagers were lucky not to be killed in a car crash on Saturday night caused by a "lethal concoction" of an inexperienced driver, alcohol and speed, police say.
Senior Sergeant Brian Benn, of Dunedin, said the five, aged from 14 to 16, were driving on Dalziel Rd, Brockville, in a red Mazda about midnight when the driver lost control on a bend causing the car to crash into a fence and land on its side.
The car was allegedly travelling at 80kmh on a 35kmh corner and the 16-year-old male driver was found to be over the legal breath alcohol limit for a youth.
A 15-year-old youth was taken to hospital with minor injuries and upon release was charged with breaching his bail conditions.
The driver was charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol and with dangerous driving.
