A police spokeswoman said two cars collided on State Highway 1, near Leith Valley Rd, about 2.10pm.
The three injured people have been taken to Dunedin Hospital by St John Ambulance.
The road was blocked for some time, but north-bound traffic is now flowing slowly.
The accident and the resulting traffic queues caused a minor nose-to-tail crash further along SH1, but no-one was injured.
