Top debaters to represent region - no argument

Two Columba College pupils have argued their way into the Otago-Southland debating team which will compete in the national final in Wellington later this year.

Head prefect Lydia Joseph and fellow year 13 pupil Bridget Scott were selected from a pool of about 60 talented debaters at the Otago-Southland Regional Debating Tournament, held at the University of Otago's Hunter Centre at the weekend.

Along with teammate Lydia Christensen, the girls won the regional tournament for the second year in a row, successfully debating the moot "This house would ban zoos''.

Principal Juliette Hayes said it was the second year Lydia Joseph had been selected for the Otago-Southland team and she was "very proud'' of the pupils' efforts.

"Our debaters are very enthusiastic about their craft and put many hours into researching and practising.

"It is a great privilege to be selected to represent the region and I know Lydia and Bridget will honour this opportunity by doing their absolute best at the national competition,'' she said.

They will be joined by Otago Girls' High School pupil Sabrina Swerdloff, who will also represent the region for the second time at the nationals on May 25-28.
