The group installed 12 boxes in the area yesterday during a volunteer day for New Zealand Conservation Week.
The project aims to install 110 traps across an area spanning 11km.
It is part of the Bring Back the Seabirds campaign run by Forest and Bird.
Ms Cunninghame said she hoped the project would help titi (muttonbirds) thrive in a nearby nesting site.
Remote cameras detected rats, possums, cats and stoats in the area, she said.
