Gini Letham (front left) and Graeme Loh (front right) set up trap boxes at Sandfly Bay helped by (back from left) Grady Quinn,  Franny Cunninghame and Jorge Jimenez, holding Niko Jimenez-Cunninghame (1).

The group installed 12 boxes in the area yesterday during a volunteer day for New Zealand Conservation Week.

The  project aims to install 110 traps across an area spanning 11km.

It is part of the Bring Back the Seabirds campaign run by Forest and Bird.

Ms Cunninghame said she hoped the project would help titi (muttonbirds) thrive in a nearby nesting site.

Remote cameras detected rats, possums, cats and stoats in the area, she said.
