Two Kavanagh College pupils took more than a year to find the right cause for which to shave their heads - an 18-month-old boy with a brain tumour and multiple tumours on his spine.

Olivia Sutherland and Emily Protheroe decided to lose their locks for Richie Branford, the nephew of their teacher Lynley Harris, after hearing about his condition two months ago.

He and his family live in Auckland and the girls wanted to support them through their difficult time.

From donations and a raffle the girls raised about $1000 and expected to get more over the next couple of weeks.

While Olivia felt "lighter" after the shave, Mrs Harris was reduced to tears as she was "completely overwhelmed" people would want to support her family.

She was "grateful there are people in the world like that".
