The engine of the 4.8m inflatable catamaran broke down off Tunnel Beach. However,
the two occupants were able to call for help with their marine radio, Senior Sergeant Brian Benn, of Dunedin, said.
Two inflatable rescue boats from the St Clair Surf Club were sent to tow the vessel back to St Clair.
''It could have been different if they weren't prepared,'' Snr Sgt Benn said.
