A small but special University of Otago 150th celebration cocktail evening will be held in Dunedin's sister city Edinburgh - followed by visits to universities in Scotland and England.

Otago vice-chancellor Harlene Hayne, chancellor Royden Somerville and development and alumni relations office director Shelagh Murray were travelling to Edinburgh for the event this Tuesday.

External engagement deputy vice-chancellor Nicholson said the university had links to the University of Edinburgh through the international office, and regularly took students studying there on exchange.

"The university is in contact with 275 alumni living in Scotland and, in addition, invites were sent to about 80 Otago alumni living in Northern England, and 179 in Ireland."

Prof Helen Nicholson said the group would also travel to the University of Glasgow, University of Edinburgh, and Oxford and Cambridge for other alumni events.

Next Friday, a dinner for more than 100 guests will be held in the Houses of Parliament, in London.

This is over the top. Four people travelling to the UK plus extensive costs for themselves and the events they will host for alumni and guests is not a good use of our taxes. Is the 'celebration' for the university or themselves? Could be done without travel using Skype.Think abut the carbon footprint as well as our costs which would be better spent here.
