Upgraded cycleway design expected soon

The future look of one of Dunedin's most contentious cycleway projects could be known by the end of next month.

The section of Portobello Rd between Portsmouth Dr and Timaru St had two lanes closed to traffic and converted to cycleway last year.

The Dunedin City Council had planned to upgrade that section of cycleway this year to a cycle-focused design.

However, controversial aspects of the South Dunedin cycleway roll-out stalled work across the network earlier this year, with council staff committing to a complete redesign.

For the Portobello Rd section, new designs were expected to include a "highly practical road and cycleway layout, improved road markings and signs, complemented by a vastly improved general environment providing a family-friendly atmosphere'', council infrastructure and networks general manager Ruth Stokes said in August.

That "family-friendly atmosphere'' could include street furniture, drinking fountains and plantings that would make for a "park-like environment, rather than feeling like you're in the middle of the road'', she said.

Council network development and operations manager Michael Harrison said the plans, expected to be presented to nearby residents and business owners late next month or early February, would stay true to that ideal, with a "greater level of urban design''.

The designs would be shared with the wider community at the same time, Mr Harrison said.

It was hoped construction could begin in late March.

What would be constructed in the remaining parts of the South Dunedin cycle network would be looked at "in more depth'' once the Portobello Rd work was under way, Mr Harrison said.
