A Mosgiel grandmother gave two "gorgeous" dresses to help a charity shop step back in time.

Shop on Carroll manager Fiona Dodds said the Dunedin opportunity shop would be transformed next month to sell donated retro and vintage items made between  1930 and 1979.

The "absolutely amazing" items people had donated included clothing and jewellery.

"People have been very generous — Dunedin is fantastic," Ms Dodds said.

Many of the items were back in fashion, Ms Dodds said.

Mosgiel grandmother Mona Mathewson (91) gave two dresses from her glory box for the shop to sell next month.

She gave a 1970s polyester dress with the label Elizabeth Byrne, and a 1950s floral cotton dress with the label Paradise Production.

Both dresses were made in New Zealand and were bought at Penrose’s store, on the corner of George and St Andrew Sts in Dunedin.Mrs Mathewson wore the yellow dress to her four children’s weddings and the other dress was for "dressy occasions".

"I certainly wouldn’t have worn it when I was doing the housework. It was a special dress," Mrs Mathewson said.

She  saw the shop advertising the upcoming transformation in the Otago Daily Times and decided to give the dresses for the shop to sell.

Presbyterian Support Otago communications, fundraising and marketing director Monica Lindemann was modelling the Elizabeth Byrne dress this week.

"It’s the perfect fit — I feel like Cinderella ... and ready to go to a disco."

Shop on Carroll shop assistant Rachel Tombs was modelling the floral dress this week and gave it a twirl.

"As soon as I put the dress on, I really liked it — it’s gorgeous," Miss Tombs said.
