Dunedin's Waitangi Day celebrations in the Octagon will be a chance to relax and enjoy music, kapa haka and hangi food.

Starting at 11am on Wednesday, February 6, the free public event will begin with the national anthem, followed by a performance by Dunedin kapa haka group Te Aho Paihere.

About 11.40am, local reggae/soul/funk group Loose & Colourful will play Kiwi classics, warming up the crowd for a hangi lunch prepared by Araiteuru marae.

Loose & Colourful will return at 1pm to perform until the close of the event at 2pm.

Also on Waitangi Day, Dunedin historian Bill Dacker will lead a walking tour looking at the Treaty of Waitangi in Dunedin and Otago, starting with an introduction at Toitu Otago Settlers Museum at 10.30am.

Mr Dacker will also give a talk on aspects of Waitangi Day, with particular relevance to Otakou and Murihiku, from 2pm at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery.
