A rescue helicopter hovers close to cliffs above Smaills Beach, Dunedin, on Sunday after a person got into difficulty in the water.

Police were called about 11am concerning a person, understood to be a surfer, who had not got back to shore, a spokeswoman said.

They were found about 11.50am, she said.

The person was reported to have minor injuries.
