The mother of all firewood sales will be held in Dunedin this weekend.

Wenita Forest Products plans to sell about 1000 tonnes of radiata pine firewood at its Mt Allan forestry block on Sunday.

Much of the wood was salvaged from an 800ha area which was ravaged by fire in February.

The fire, which was believed to have started from a chainsaw spark, took three days and cost more than $1 million to quell.

Smoke from the blaze covered the Taieri Plain, causing flights to Dunedin International Airport to be re-routed and halting the Taieri Gorge train.

"The Mt Allan fire was a lot of inconvenience for a lot of people - especially the smoke - and we wanted to do something for the local community that was affected," Wenita forester John Kerr said yesterday.

"So it's a bit of a gesture of goodwill. Everyone likes cheap firewood."

About 20% of Wenita's 4420ha forestry block at Mt Allan was burnt in the fire.

"It could've ended up at Wakari," Mr Kerr said.

"There's fuel load right through there. It was a great effort by everybody.

"We've got quite a bit of experience at dealing with fires in the last few years."

Mr Kerr said it was the ideal time to be harvesting wood for next year.

"Most people only think of firewood in winter. But, if you get it now and split it, it's nice and dry for next winter."

The firewood sale will be held at Mt Allan from 8am till 4pm on Sunday.

The location will be signposted from Salisbury Rd, or maps are available from the Wenita Forest Products office in Mosgiel.
