Entries are still coming in ``thick and fast'' for the latest Otago Wildlife Photography Competition, and could come close to matching last year's record level.

Museum marketing manager Charlotte Neilson said there were a record 2174 photography and 52 video entries in last year's exhibition.

Since the annual contest started 19 years ago, it had become increasingly popular, and last year entries were up nearly 140% on the 936 of 10 years ago.

``We are still receiving entries thick and fast today,'' she said.

It was easy to ``jump online'' to submit entries to otago museum.nz via the Otago Museum's internet site, and although it remained unclear what the final entry level would be, she expected it to be close to last year's or perhaps higher.

Museum exhibitions designer Shanaya Allan, who is a competition judge, has noticed a continuing rise in the technical skills shown in the entries.

Ready access to a wide range of images on the internet also gave competitors fresh ideas they could pursue in their own photography, she added.

The competition is open to all amateur photographers and videographers living in Otago.

Entries close at noon this Friday.

Ms Neilson said some people were shy about submitting their photographs, and some tended to underestimate their ability.

``You don't know until you try, and it's a great opportunity to give it a crack,'' she said.
