A former Dunedin singer-songwriter has won a competition to write an anthem for this year's Special Olympics summer games in Dunedin.

Sarah Conlan wrote and recorded Soaring High to inspire athletes at the games.

''I wrote the song specifically for the competition. I wanted to do something that would be really inspirational to the athletes,'' she said. Mrs Conlan (nee Benn), who moved to Twizel last year, has three children, aged 1-7.

''Hopefully, this will be a really great opportunity and give my career a boost, so I get noticed.''

The song was recorded at the Angel's Gate Studio in Christchurch and would be available on iTunes, with profits going to the Special Olympics.

Mrs Conlan (27) will perform the song at the games opening in Dunedin, on November 27, when more than 1200 athletes with intellectual disabilities and supporters will participate in the Special Olympics New Zealand eighth national summer games until November 30.

The games, held every four years, are the largest regular sports event for people with intellectual disabilities in New Zealand.

Athletes will compete in 10 Olympic-style sports: aquatics, athletics, basketball, bocce, equestrian, football, golf, indoor bowls, powerlifting and tenpin bowling.
