A Dunedin woman was left shaken after witnessing a bag snatch in a busy Dunedin area yesterday.

Christine Scott said she was on her way to the dentist near Liverpool St about noon when she heard a woman scream ''get him, get him''.

Two men chased a man who appeared to be running away with the victim's wallet, she said.

''I felt as if it was me ...

''I'll have to get my blood pressure checked.''

The man, who appeared to be in his early 20s and of Caucasian descent with dark hair, got away despite being chased, Ms Scott said.

A police spokeswoman said the man was last seen running on Princes St near the old post office.

Police attended a cellphone theft in Queens Gardens at the same time, the spokeswoman said.

The victim had arranged on Facebook to meet the man and sell him a cellphone, but when the transaction happened the man ran towards Bond St with the cellphone without paying.

The man was believed to be about 19 and was wearing a black hoodie, grey pants and white shoes.

Police were investigating both incidents, but could not confirm whether they were related, the spokeswoman said.
