Witnesses to serious assaults sought

A man was left with a serious facial injury after being assaulted outside Dunedin Airport in an early morning attack.

Police are calling for witnesses to come forward after the man required hospital treatment for his injuries following two assaults early last Friday.

''Just before 6am on February 10, a man was assaulted outside the main doors of Dunedin Airport, during which he sustained a serious facial injury,'' police said in a statement.

''The victim was then assaulted again a short time later, this time near the fire station at the airport.''

The man's assailants then stole his car, police said.

''Police currently have two persons of interest in custody in relation to the incident, but are asking for any witnesses who may have been in the area around the time of the assault to come forward,'' the statement said.

''If you have any information that could assist police with their investigation please contact Constable Hamish Fraser.''

A St John spokesman said a 40-year-old man was taken to Dunedin Hospital with serious injuries following the incident.

The man was found by airport police and that was how his injuries were reported to St John, he said.
